The Headwaters Knife
Description
The Headwaters Knife –
(This Knife was a limited run For Aegis Outdoors Survival School and and was originally a limited run……..But with much thoughtful consideration and many many requests IT IS BACK!!!!!)
This knife was designed by my friends at Aegis Outdoors (at the Headwaters of Minnesota) and we here at IHK were honored to make this for them. The Headwaters knife was made for the highest level of function and feel and I liked the design and feel so much I decided to offer it here for you as well. If you are wanting something a little smaller in profile than the Sojourner but still large enough for serious bushcrafting at 3/16th thick then this is your knife. (Most knives with this thickness and length are far more expensive).
As with all IHK knives, the “Headwaters Knife” comes with a custom handmade leather sheath with a dangler option (add on). In stock!
- 10″ overall, 5″ Blade
- Blade width is 1 1/4 in wide
- Convex Grind
- 90 degree spine
- 3/16th inch Hammered, Hand Forged, Polished 1095 High Carbon Steel
- Custom Leather Sheath
This Knife is new for the 2020 year and is significantly different than the original design by Aegis, as this knife has all of the balance, ergonomics and beauty as well as function that you are so used to with all of the IHK lineup!!
(Since this is a hot new addition for 2020 and a re-introduction of a solid classic, please allow an additional 5-7 business days to receive since we will be making them as the orders are coming in).

Headwaters Knife: Superb Handmade American Blade
Every aspect of dealing with Indy Hammered Knives has been amazing. First off, I initially emailed James at IHK to ask him some questions about the Headwaters knife. Not only did he return my email immediately, but he also asked some very important questions in order to get a more complete picture as to my needs. After a few emails and suggestions I decided on the Headwaters Knife with an Amboyna burl handle, along with a brown leather sheath with a ferro rod holder. Additionally, I ordered an IHK ferro rod with a matching Amboyna burl handle.
The fit, finish, and overall craftsmanship of all three items is phenomenal. In particular, the knife is like nothing else in my collection. The hand-hammered marks on the blade make it look like a piece of art. James’ attention to detail with his craft is simply amazing.
What’s a knife review without some use in the field? I told James I was taking a bushcraft course within a week of ordering, so he wasted no time in completing the finishing touches on my items and getting them in the mail. Everything arrived in perfect condition. I used the knife and ferro rod in an Aegis Outdoors bushcraft class in Minnesota.
Chopping: the knife surprised me with how well it chopped cross-grain. I’d normally use a hatchet for this task, but I wanted to see how the blade performed. Flawless.
Splitting/Batoning: Again, the knife glided through firewood like butter. Couldn’t be happier.
Carving: I used the blade to quickly fashion 6 tent stakes. The entire process took less than five minutes. The task was effortless.
One more thing to note: the high level of customer service from IHK was phenomenal. James treated me with respect, enthusiasm, and he seemed to genuinely care about my needs as a customer. This is a level of service that seems to be rare these days. I couldn’t be happier supporting this company.
Overall, I could not be happier with this purchase. I will definitely be ordering from James and IHK again.

Beautiful workmanship, super sharp blade and excellently weighted. I can’t wait to get it in the field. I love the desert ironwood handle material. The sheath is simple, well-constructed, and exactly what I had hoped for
